Chicken Shawarma with Creamy Garlic Sauce

(Adapted from Simple Recipe)

For the chicken:
4 lbs boneless, skinless chicken thighs or breasts
2 tbs ground cumin
2 tsp ground coriander
2 tsp paprika
1 tsp turmeric
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp ground ginger
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
Juice of 1 large lime
4 tbs olive oil
Salt and pepper, to taste

For the Garlic Sauce:
1 cup plain Greek yogurt
2 cloves garlic (finely grated)
Juice of 1/2 lime
1/2 tsp ground cumin
Salt and pepper, to taste

  1. In a large bowl, combine all the marinade ingredients.
  2. Add the chicken and mix well.
  3. Set aside for 15 minutes (the longer the better, even overnight in the fridge).
  4. Preheat the oven to 400F.
  5. Roast the chicken for about 25 minutes.
    • Note: Alternatively, you can grill the chicken, about 6 minutes per side.
  6. To make the garlic sauce: mix all sauce ingredients in a small bowl.
  7. Serve the chicken with garlic sauce and rice (or pita or salad)
